resilience from outreach

The Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR) is Virginia’s leading natural resource conservation agency. They protect the state’s natural habitat, parks, water sources, dams, open spaces and outdoor access. Flooding is one of the most common disasters that occurs in Virginia, impacting people, property, and the environment. When DCR’s Office of Resilience Planning sought support for the Agency’s responsibilities in flood resilience planning, outreach, and engagement, they came to WCG. We responded with a full suite of materials that engaged a community.

an open dialogue

We started by helping to define the Office’s mission and values then using our learnings to create a comprehensive, cohesive style guide. The guide incorporated all the Office’s work – including Coastal and Statewide plans. Templates created working documents that each department could use to build unified, branded assets and graphics. Then tapping into our deep experience in community engagement, we developed assets that helped inform residents of the tremendous opportunity to share their personal stories about flooding.

Materials included posters, rack cards, flyers and social assets that showcased the department’s web app—complete with a QR code—making the collection and reporting of flood issues even simpler. Spanish translations of materials created an accessible experience for all participants. While some items were printed and ready to distribute, our approach included a handy toolkit of assets that department members could conveniently use to promote activities throughout the year.

The client reported that our strategic messaging clearly conveyed their mission and that our design approach significantly enhanced their brand presence. The materials are currently being leveraged to boost webinar registrations on flooding and to drive community event engagement.
